Permalink compromised

I was recently working on a client’s web site, which is using wordpress as back end.

The client wanted the front page content area changed to a new “page”. So I went to theme options and changed that content area page to the specified new page by selecting it from the pull down menu and saving it.

Only this small thing, crashed the site’s url and home page. Whenever I browsed the site http://www.sitename.com, it always redirected to http://www.sitename/newpage and stopped showing homepage, instead started to land on that page.

I googled and did everything that was in the dictionary but nothing helped. Finally I changed the “permalinks” back to default from “%postname%” .. it kind of half helped that the site’s home page started to show, but the site still redirects to http://www.sitename.com/newpage, although it shows homepage. I have no clue how to fix it.

But half of the problem got solved.
